Dr. Jodie’s Approach To Skin Laser
Dr. Jodie prefers to categorise her approach to skin laser treatments in three main ways – lasers that help with vascular issues, lasers that help with skin pigmentation complaints, and lasers that help with skin texture and tightening. This way we address all aspects of skin ageing and prioritise the most effective way to achieve results.
Skin Lasers For Vascular Conditions At Melbourne’s Dr. Jodie Clinic
Excel V+ Laser
At the Melbourne’s Dr. Jodie clinic, our primary skin laser for the treatment of vascular conditions is the Excel V+ Laser. Vascular conditions affecting your skin include red spots such as broken facial capillaries, spider naevi, cherry angiomas, as well as generalised facial redness, flushing, and rosacea, a complex inflammatory skin condition.
This Excel V+ Laser technology works by using light energy to target haemoglobin within blood vessels. Light energy is absorbed as heat, causing the blood vessel to spasm and close. Your body’s natural renewal process then generates new skin without the unwanted vessels. This sophisticated, state-of-the-art device is highly precise and can be used to treat small, isolated lesions and localised areas of skin or it can be used to address larger areas of concern, such as generalised redness affecting your entire face, neck or decolletage, depending on your needs.
The Excel V+ Laser feels like a rubber band flick, but is generally well tolerated, unless you have a particularly low pain threshold (like Dr. Jodie herself!). After treatment you may experience some redness, bruising, crusting, or develop some swelling, among other things, so timing with your social calendar is a must!
At the Dr. Jodie clinic, we often recommend a minimum of 1-2 treatments of Excel V+ Laser for visible results, but up to 4-6 may be necessary, depending on the severity and resistance of the condition we are treating, as well as individual factors.
This treatment is not recommended for darker skin types.
Laser Genesis
Laser Genesis is a no-downtime, non-invasive device is part of the Excel V+ Laser system, that offers an alternative for those who do not want to experience any recovery time. It really should be thought of as a separate, unique laser. It targets the smaller blood vessels of your skin to help with mild facial redness, flushing and even rosacea. Most importantly, it does not require any downtime, so you can get on with your day. However, Laser Genesis cannot be used to target individual lesions and is less effective at treating larger broken facial capillaries than the Excel V+ Laser. Nonetheless, it is a fantastic treatment for minimising redness affecting your whole face, neck or decolletage, and brings with it powerful rejuvenation capabilities and anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, it is suitable for all skin types.
Medi Pulse Pro XL IPL Treatment
It is worth mentioning that Medi Pulse Pro IPL therapy, although not a laser treatment, can also be used to address blood vessel related concerns. Even so, at the Dr. Jodie clinic we tend to favour the power of our dedicated vascular laser, the Excel V+ Laser, for this purpose.
Skin Lasers For Pigmentation Conditions At Melbourne’s Dr. Jodie Clinic
Medi Pulse Pro XL IPL Treatment
The Medi Pulse Pro IPL treatment comes into its element when addressing skin pigmentation. This includes isolated brown spots, such as age spots or sunspots, and more generalised skin pigmentation, such as freckling. It must be emphasised that this device is not a laser, but an IPL machine. Laser light is delivered in a single beam or wavelength (colour) to target a particular skin depth or chromophore (molecule responsible for that colour). IPL light is delivered as a broad band of light encompassing a range of wavelengths (colours) that target a range of skin layers and depths and a variety of chromophores. Imagine laser light as a ‘light sabre’ and IPL light as a ‘lightbulb’ to try to understand the difference.
Even so, it is possible to use a specialised IPL filter to focus on pigmentary changes within your skin. The light is absorbed as heat by melanin, the molecule responsible for the brown hues in your skin, damaging the target pigmented cells. Your body then acts to renew your skin without the unwanted pigmentation.
At the Dr. Jodie clinic in Melbourne, our IPL filters were custom made to primarily benefit skin tone and rejuvenation, (rather than tattoo removal and hair removal), so we could focus on improving your skin colour and quality.
In fact, the Medi Pulse Pro XL IPL device was entirely custom designed for the Dr. Jodie clinic to include a broad band light (BBL) like gliding function, which many skin-focused IPL systems lack, to cover larger areas of your skin with a more controlled, safer heating process.
The Medi Pulse Pro XL IPL treatment does come with some recovery time though, as it is usual to experience some redness, bronzing, crusting, and flaking of your skin, among other things.
As with other devices, serial treatments are also recommended. Isolated brown spots may settle with 1-2 treatments (although there is no guarantee), but more generalised skin pigmentation may require 4-6 treatments.
The Medi Pulse Pro XL IPL is not suitable for darker skin types.
The Excel V+ Laser
The Excel V+ Laser is highly versatile and can double as a treatment for unwanted skin pigmentation, in addition to your blood vessel concerns. It too can address both generalised changes, such as patchy or diffuse red-brown hues, known as dyschromias, or isolated brown spots, like age spots. If you are already undergoing treatment for your vascular issues, we can sometimes tackle your pigmentation problems in the same treatment session. Again, serial treatments are required.
Green Laser Genesis
When it comes to no-downtime laser for gradual lightening of skin pigmentation, then look no further than Green Laser Genesis (as opposed to traditional Laser Genesis). This is a new cutting-edge laser technology at the Dr. Jodie clinic that sends micropulses of light to address superficial pigmentation, as well as small superficial blood vessels, within your skin. While no recovery time is needed and you can get on with your day, the ‘pay-off’ is that 4-6 sessions are essential for fading, which tends to be gradual. Again, this is for treatment of larger areas of generalised skin pigmentation and not for isolated pigmented lesions.
Skin Lasers For Skin Texture And Skin Tightening At Melbourne’s Dr. Jodie Clinic
The Scarlet S Radio Frequency Microneedling Device
Traditionally, laser devices were the only real option available for potent skin tightening and rejuvenation. These lasers tended to be aggressive and ablative, meaning the entire surface of your skin was removed, leading to weeks of downtime and a greater risk of treatment side effects, like scarring and hypopigmentation (white patches). Fractional lasers were then introduced, where only columns of skin over a large area were treated, leaving untouched skin surrounding each treatment column. This greatly improved healing processes and recovery time. Other competing technology then emerged in the form of radio frequency microneedling to give similar results with even less recovery time. This is why Dr. Jodie chose the Scarlet S Radio Frequency Microneedling device over laser technology for your skin tightening and rejuvenation needs in her Melbourne clinic.
Scarlet S Radio Frequency Microneedling treatments have shown remarkable efficacy in enhancing skin texture, resulting in the reduction of fine lines, wrinkles and the appearance of open pores and acne scarring. Additionally, these treatments contribute to significant advancements in firming and tightening your skin.
The device works by combining the power of radiofrequency tightening with microneedling. In essence, this renders it a fractional treatment, which means there is heating of columns of skin, which are surrounded by healthy, unaffected tissue for advanced healing. Treatment zones are ‘damaged’ by heat and your body’s natural renewal processes allow for the replacement of the old, damaged tissue with fresh, new tissue with new collagen and elastin. The outcome is advanced skin firming and improved skin elasticity.
Unlike lasers, which are drawn to chromophores (the molecules responsible for the colour of your skin), the Scarlet S is chromophore-independent, meaning it is suitable for all skin types.
The great news is that recovery time is minimal. You may experience some redness for 1-2 days or a grid-like pattern on your skin for days to 1-2 weeks, but this is barely noticeable and easily coverable.
Like all fractionated treatments, serial sessions with Scarlet S Radio Frequency Microneedling are required. At the Dr. Jodie clinic, we recommend 3-4 treatments for optimal skin tightening results.
Laser Genesis
Laser Genesis is not just a treatment for vascular conditions and skin tone, it is also a fantastic rejuvenation device that allows for improvements in skin texture and firming. Again, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, and pore size are minimised. It also has a potent anti-inflammatory effect. This is literally your ‘lunchtime facial’ equivalent as no recovery time is needed and you can immediately return to normal activities. At the Dr. Jodie clinic, we recommend 4-6 treatments for best results.
Medi Pulse Pro XL IPL Treatment
Although the Medi Pulse Pro XL IPL treatment is mainly used for pigmentation issues in the Dr. Jodie clinic, it can be used for skin firming using lower energy rejuvenation settings that make it virtually a no downtime affair.
