What are Jowls?
Jowls are the bulges of fat and lax skin that hang below the jawline on either side of the mouth. They tend to become more prominent with age because we lose volume from the lower face and everything falls forward and down. Mid face sag compounds the problem of lower face sag.
There are number of causes for Jowls, including bony loss from the jawline, fat loss from the mid and lower face, drooping of fat pads (especially around the mouth), and lax skin.
How are Jowls treated?
Addressing Jowls is complicated; it often requires treatment of both the lower face and the mid face. Dr. Jodie understands this complexity and deals with the cause of Jowls not just the end effect.
Dr. Jodie believes the best approach is to use Dermal Fillers to subtly revolumise all areas of the lower face from the ear to the chin where there is volume loss, taking care not to add to the bulge of the Jowl itself. This approach creates lift that smooths out the entire area and pulls back on the bulging Jowls.
Mid face sag should also be corrected using Dermal Fillers. This will minimise the amount of filler required to refresh your lower face and better balance the proportions of your face for a more natural look.
Early intervention is best. In cases where the Jowls have become more prominent, more invasive measures may be required. Dr. Jodie will work with you to consider all options and formulate a workable plan.
