Perfect Facial Symmetry, It’s Just Another Beauty Myth

Perfect Facial Symmetry, It’s Just Another Beauty Myth

August, 2017

Did you know that beauty does not require perfect facial symmetry? In fact, perfect facial symmetry is not even desirable!

The truth is that no-one’s face is perfectly symmetrical. For many years we have been told by beauty experts that one side of the face should be a mirror image of the other. But this is simply not true! Bone structure and tissue volume naturally vary from the left side to the right side of the face, which is not only perfectly normal, but may enhance attractiveness.

Let’s take a close look at Marilyn Monroe, one of the world’s most recognisable women and a universal icon of beauty. This collection of pictures debunks the entire concept that perfect facial symmetry is essential for beauty.

In the picture above, where asymmetry naturally exists between the two sides of her face, there is facial balance and harmony, culminating in the timeless beauty we all know. In the two pictures below, which are computer-generated mirror-images of her right and left sides, Marilyn looks like a caricature of herself and is almost unrecognisable.

Perfect facial symmetry does NOT equate to beauty. The two sides of the face should be sisters, not twins!

So next time you look in the mirror to see subtle differences from one side of your face to the other, don’t fret. The concept of perfect facial symmetry is just another beauty myth.
